Washers

I have absolutely no idea what they do, but they appear in pretty much every piece of furniture/plumbing/electrical equipment ever. So they must be:
GOOD
According to Wikipedia, washers are "normally used to distribute the load of a threaded fastener." That's cool.

I mostly just get angry because their name is a lie: they don't wash anything. In fact, my only run-ins with these small metal liars has left me more dirty than when I started. I disagree with your final decision on their good or badness. Although if they truly do distribute the loads of threaded fasteners...then I guess I can let it slide.
